Most modems that we sell are have a high bandwidth of 8Mbits for download and 1Mbits for upload. The highest ADSL bandwidth service available is 3Mbits to date

3. What is the minimum computer specs needed for ADSL Modem/Service to work?

· Windows system Windows 95 (original CD or Cab (Cabinet) files mandatory) Processor equivalent to a Pentium 90 MHz.32 MB of RAM75 MB available on the hard drive CD-ROM Drive One free PCI slot for internal modem installation Ethernet card with RJ45 connector for external modem installation

4. What's a phone filter and why do I need it?
A distributed filter, or micro-filter, is a small electronic component that fits between your phone line and a regular voice device, such as a phone, a fax, or any device with a regular modem such as a cable box, alarm system or digital TV.

When DSL (ADSL) is provided over voice lines, all devices in the house except the DSL modem must be connected through filters. The filter protects the phone devices from high frequency noise. They are low-pass filters. The filter is also there to protect the DSL signal from being contaminated by high frequency noise added by analog phone devices, answering machines, etc.

5. Why does my IP Address change every time ?
A: Your IP address is a dynamic IP address that is given to you each time you connect. When you disconnect, that IP address is freed. The odds of getting the same IP address two times in a row are very slim for national providers, but slightly more for local providers. Dynamic IP addressing saves IP address space so that the ISP can serve the same amount of customers with less IP addresses.

6. Do I have to be a Bell long distance customer to use this great ADSL modem?
No, there are many providers that can give better and affordable ADSL service and works with any of them including Bell Canada

7. What's the difference between one modem over the other?
The difference between modems is an on-going debate. all modem follow specific standards in order for the modem to work. The main difference is basically the make of the modem and the chipset used.

8. Why is the price of one modem is higher then the other?
Again this depends on popularity and availability. The higher end modems have an Alcatel based chipset such as Alcatel Speed touch and Efficient Networks. 3COM uses ADI (Analog Devices) chipset.

9. Do I really need a second phone line for the ADSL modem?
The choice is yours to make but you do not need a second line for the DSL modem to work. On one line you can connect to the Internet and make voice calls at the same time on the same number. Or you can be connected to the Internet and send or receive faxes at the same time. You can not however make a voice call and send and receive faxes at the same time.

Most of the providers use PPPOE protocol. The modem are G.DMT based.

11. Can I choose any provider to use this ADSL modem?
Yes. Most modems are configured for use with any provider in Ontario/Quebec provided the meet protocol standard G.DMT

No. The ADSL modem is not equipped as a fax modem. You must continue to use existing dial up faxing or fax machine for this purpose. These devices will work on the telephone line configured for the high speed service.

13. Do any of these modems need drivers?
Maybe, Most Ethernet modems only need the PPPOE software provided by your provider or in download section, The only modems that need drivers are USB / PCI ADSL modems.

14. Which ADSL provider do you recommend?
The teksavvy service provides access to Internet based services. In fact it's the very few providers that provide the no upload and bandwidth cap

15. If I buy an ADSL  modem, will I save the rental fee on my Bell Canada Sympatico service?
This is something we really can't answer, You will have to contact Bell Canada to find out. This is the one of reason why people change ADSL service

16. Which modem is faster USB or Ethernet or PCI?
It's well known that Ethernet modems provides the best performance because it's considered a "hardware" modem. USB / PCI modems are considered "software" modems because it requires software to run and depends on speed of the computer.
